Utah and San Rafael Swell
I recently spent a week in a location in Utah which I did not even know existed. The San Rafael Swell consists of a giant dome-shaped anticline of sandstone, shale, and limestone that was pushed up during the Paleocene Laramide Orogeny 40–60 million years ago. It is west of Green River and way off any highway. I went with a group of photographers. Traveling to the locations was 4-wheel drive slog thru sand, rock and boulders. We camped each night and you can see my tent, my home for the time, in the middle of nowhere. The 3rd photo shows our group campsite. Despite nothing which horse might feed on there were wild horse in many locations. The views are stunning - and evoke a reaction close to what you feel the first time you see the Grand Canyon. An amazing area worth a visit, but very, very difficult to get to.
