BEARS

Bears are fascinating animals. All of my time has been spent with black and brown bears in North America. Black bears are smaller, but still very big. . The interior brown bear, that we know as the grizzly bear, is a true omnivore. It lives on almost anything it can find from moths and insects to deer and elk. Large grizzlies can be 700-800 pounds. They are very territorial and getting close to them is unsafe. Coastal brown bears live on grass until the salmon run and then feast themselves on the endless supply of salmon eating 50-100lbs a day. They grow much larger with males reaching up to 1200 lbs and standing 9-10ft. In Alaska they have not been hunted for a long time and are more curious than frightened by people. With abundant salmon they really don't view people as threats or food, unless as you are careful. Most of these images were captured in Alaska on the Katmai peninsula.
